Book Review: I AM YOGA

New York Times bestselling illustrator Peter H. Reynolds and author and certified yoga instructor Susan Verde team up in this book about creativity and the power of self-expression. I AM YOGA encourages children to explore the world of yoga and make room in their hearts for the world beyond it.

The best animated films appeal to both kids and adults alike – although at different levels. That way an adult can enjoy a movie just as much as the kids and come away with a different appreciation. I AM YOGA is like that.

The first words in the book talk to both audiences, “When I feel small in a world so big,…” Both adults and kids feel the world is big but in different ways. The answer to both challenges is to close your eyes “and make room in my mind, in my heart, to create and imagine.”

What follows is the exploration of 16 yoga poses and what they can express, in a playful way. Kids instinctively know how to play, yet adults sometimes forget in the hustle and bustle world. The promise is that with an inner exploration, you can find inner calmness so that the world is not so overwhelming… and then tackle it.

The end of the book has basic descriptions for the 16 poses so that kids and beginners can understand and explore them. For kids this book may ground them in lessons for the future on how to deal with the busy world. For adults, it reminds us to let go, play and become calm.
