Education in Morocco: From Less Than Half to Nearly Universal Attendance

A Remarkable Journey Toward Educational Equity

As the sun bathes the vibrant streets of Morocco, a quiet revolution unfolds within its schools. The journey from educational scarcity to near-universal attendance has been nothing short of remarkable. Having visited Morocco twice, in 2022 and 2023, I witnessed firsthand the transformation that has taken place.

The Past: A Struggle for Access

In the 1970s, less than half of Morocco’s primary-age children had the opportunity to attend school. Economic challenges, cultural norms, and limited infrastructure hindered access to education. Many young minds remained untapped, their potential stifled by circumstance.

The Present: A Triumph of Enrollment

Fast-forward to today, and the landscape has shifted dramatically. Nearly every child in Morocco now steps into a classroom, with enrolment rates soaring to over 99%. This achievement reflects the tireless efforts of educators, policymakers, and families who recognize education as a gateway to progress.

The Power of Access: A Double-Edged Sword

While high enrolment rates are cause for celebration, we must tread carefully. Access alone does not guarantee quality. The challenge lies in ensuring that these eager learners not only attend school but also thrive within its walls.

Quality Matters: The Reading Comprehension Gap

Despite the impressive numbers, only about a third of Moroccan students achieve basic reading comprehension by the end of primary school. This gap highlights the need for a holistic approach—one that goes beyond filling seats and focuses on nurturing critical skills.

Conclusion: A Collective Responsibility

Morocco’s progress in education is a testament to collective determination. As we celebrate the near-universal attendance, let us remain committed to bridging the quality gap. Every child deserves not only a seat in the classroom but also the chance to flourish, dream, and shape a brighter future.
