How Self Esteem Affects Your Health

Self-esteem can be defined as the way you respect yourself. It can also be defined as the confidence level you have in yourself and in your abilities. When you feel strongly about who you are and what you can bring to the table, this will play out in the quality of your overall life. Even if you take a closer look at the way self-esteem can impact your health, there are numerous areas to look at. Think about it from the following perspectives.

1. Mental Health

When you’re dealing with a lot of mental angst and anxiety, your mind is constantly going in circles. This makes it very difficult to be productive. In a lot of ways, productivity is closely related to self-esteem because so many people tend to identify themselves by what they do. While this is a toxic trait to develop, it’s a reality for so many people because self-esteem is connected to a person’s abilities. This is why it’s important to be mindful of your self-esteem. Your mental wellness is incredibly important to prioritize. Whether you choose therapy, self-care rituals or cultivate a routine of your own, prioritize it. When you feel good about who you are and what you can do from a mental standpoint, this will directly impact how you show up in the world.

2. Energy

Self-esteem can impact the amount of energy you have to fulfill various tasks or make plans. Low self-esteem is extremely draining. This is because you’re constantly operating from a deficit. Low self-esteem can cause you to overextend yourself to others in an attempt to prove your worth. As a result, you don’t prioritize yourself or your own needs. A lack of motivation can often lead to or be a symptom of more serious issues such as depression which is also associated with perceptions of low self-worth. 

3. Relationship with Food

Self-esteem can influence your health through the way you develop a relationship with food. It’s not uncommon for people to become emotional eaters. They eat when they’re sad, happy or anxious. When eating is the coping mechanism of choice, this can easily lead to unhealthy weight gain. While weight isn’t the only determining factor in health, weight does play a role. Studies show that when a person has a larger waistline, they increase their chances of developing a chronic illness or disease. This doesn’t mean that every overweight person has low self-esteem because each person has a different body composition.

Alternatively, a person who is considered underweight or normal might be bulimic or anorexic. However, vomiting the food back up is never a good idea. This is definitely a poor relationship with food. It’s important to recognize the way self-esteem can play out in your eating habits. If you eat too much or not enough, consider what the deeper issue is. 4. Posture

When you stand with your shoulders hunched, it’s often a sign that you don’t want to take up space. Low self-esteem festers in the belief that you don’t have the right to take up space. This can negatively impact your health because poor posture leads to shoulder, neck and back pain. It can also result in difficulties with digestion and your lungs’ ability to properly operate.

Self-esteem is powerful. When your self-esteem is intact, you’ll increase your chances of making better choices that validate and uplift the person you truly are. It’s also important to recognize how much you’ll need to work on your self-esteem. There are times when it’s low because of a circumstance or experience that’s chipped away at it. When you recognize that, get back to the heart of who you are, and nurture yourself. When you’re able to develop a process like this, you won’t be able to stew in the feelings associated with low self-esteem for too long.
